Welcome to “Gear!”, my sixties British Beat blog. I am a long time vintage music magazine archivist and serious record hoarder.

Everything I curate here is from my personal collection.

Music Echo

Music Echo published March 1965

There are 59 issues in total. The first issue is No 1, 6th March 1965, the last issue is No 59, April 16th 1966. Music Echo was a British weekly music paper. From issue no 1 until issue no 23 the publication went under the title of Music Echo & Mersey Beat, from issue no 24 the title was changed to Music Echo.

Disc Weekly

Disc Weekly published February 1965

Disc was one of the top selling music papers of the fifties and early sixties. It was a little more lightweight in style compared to some of its competitors such as Melody Maker but nevertheless it provided extensive details of all of the current news and record releases.

Fabulous

Fabulous magazine published November 1964

Fabulous magazine was a larger than average sized British pin-up magazine catering for music fans. Issue No 1 was published on the 18th January 1964. By June 8th 1967 it was reduced to a more conventional size. Fabulous 208 was one of the UK’s top selling ‘teen scene’ music magazines of the 1960s.

Vintage Sixties Music Press

I will focus on reviews, interviews, candid reports and articles published in vintage sixties rock and roll mags.

Written material about the British Beat Scene will be divulged and presented in an attractive way, obscure photographs will be located, scanned and uploaded.

Groups Under The Spotlight

Beat groups and performers who created those hard-driving rhythms of the early to mid-sixties will have their resurrection on this blog.

They will include The Merseybeats, The Searchers, The Swinging Blue Jeans, The Zombies, Dave Berry, The Hollies and many more.

If the Mersey Sound, hard-edged beat ravers, rhythm and blues, guitar-dominated rock and roll, vocal harmonies, syncopated backbeats and catchy tunes are your scene . . . . you’ve found your online Beat music inner sanctum.

There is no need to go anywhere else!
